So it's great to have a classic that keeps that level of upper-class stock style, and it also adds desirable features like an upgraded V8, an overdrive transmission, and air conditioning. So it's a hardtop that you'll love to cruise.
The Montclair debuted for 1955. This coupe was on the upper end of the class spectrum, and it was proud to show it. After all, you paid 50 percent more for this than a Ford V8 in '55, and so they made sure you got extra flair for the money. The longer chassis allowed designers to create bodies that were a bit more upscale-looking. You especially see this on the trim line that starts above the grille, wraps around the front, and continues down the body. It really helps to emphasize the longer and wider lines that made the best 1950s cars. The same road-owning feeling goes for the wide chrome bumpers. The design even seemed to borrow the best from the custom car scene with long headlight overhangs. The paint package is even distinct. The champagne on the roof also flows just a little bit above the doors. It's a tasteful contrast to the classic black. It's the right finish for a cruiser, not a trailer queen... and as you look at the full package, you really see a well-upgraded style that has an emphasis on driving.
The interior is quite vintage, which is nice because the black and tan inside is very much in harmony with the exterior two-tone. Bright door trim, cloth seat inserts, plush carpeting, and terrific details (like the rear armrest) really set this Mercury apart. So you have a detailed classic kept in detailed care. The intricate factory steering wheel and the arching dash show off the very stylish gauge package. It makes you want to hit the road in this hardtop. That's why you've been given upgrades like cup holders, auxiliary readouts, and cold-blowing R134a air conditioning.
Mercury coupes were sought-after back in the day for their better lineup of V8 power, and so this one takes that spirit to heart. That's why you now have a 302 cubic-inch V8 that's larger that's both larger and younger than what was offered in 1955. It also has nice upgrades like an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, an HEI distributor, and a serpentine belt system. Another worthwhile upgrade is the four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Plus, you have power steering, power brakes, four wheel discs, and modern touring tires for a proper cruiser experience.
As with older restorations like this, there are details that can be improved. Maybe you want to upgrade the paint, update the exhaust, or dial-in the motor/t
